H-501 Pencil Hardness Tester

The Micro-Metrics H-501 Pencil Hardness Gauge tests coating hardness of cured organic coatings. When two materials of different degrees of hardness are forced against one another, the softer material must yield to the harder, making it possible to assess hardness of one material relative to the other. Pencil leads of increasing hardnesses are pressed against a coated surface until one lead mars the surface. Surface hardness is defined by the hardest pencil grade that just fails to mar the coating.

Up to eight leads can be set in the metal-barrelled lead-holders which are mounted in a white plastic instrument case. Using the metal centre tube as a guide, individual leads are pressed against the coating surface in a precise manner, until one lead mars the surface. The H-501 Pencil Hardness Tester comes as a kit with fourteen leads of differiing hardnesses supplied in a clear, plastic carrying case labelled with the hardness values, and a dressing disc to prepare the lead tips for use. Replacement leads and dressing discs may be purchased separately as required.
